Exfoliation and Why It's Necessary for Good Makeup

Updated: Nov 22, 2023

Hey beauties! Welcome back! It certainly has been busy over here at Creative Contour By Carla! Today, let's get into a really interesting topic: exfoliation and why it is necessary for your makeup to look great.

First of all, if you don't know by now, let me explain what exfoliation is. Exfoliation is a skincare practice that removes the top layer of the epidermis. This is the layer where dirt, dead skin, etc., like to sit. By exfoliating, we remove dead skin, dirt, oil, and the like. This helps create a smooth surface on the top layer of the epidermis.

There are many types and methods of exfoliating. You can use acids, cremes, scrubs, machines, or even just a towel to exfoliate your skin. Our skin turns over it's cells once about every 4 weeks. By exfoliating, we aid this process to create a smooth surface. Today I will mention two types of exfoliating products, and why exfoliation is necessary for good makeup.

So now that we know what exfoliation is and how it works, let's discuss two types of exfoliation: manual and chemical. Manual exfoliation is when you need to manually exfoliate the top layer of the epidermis. Some examples of manual exfoliation: using a towel to exfoliate your skin, or an exfoliating scrub that requires you to physically move the product around on the skin to remove the dead skin layers. Chemical exfoliation is when you use a chemical to melt the dead skin off the face. Some examples of chemical exfoliants are lactic acid, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, etc. You apply a chemical exfoliant, and it melts away the dead skin. Both methods produce a smooth surface as a result.

Ah, so now we can get into the good stuff! Why exfoliation is necessary for good makeup. Okay beauties, so like I mentioned: exfoliation creates a smooth surface as a result. This is a huge benefit when it comes to your makeup look. So let's get into some of the ways.

Even Texture

A smooth surface means a more even texture on the skin's surface! When your skin is smooth, makeup adheres and sits much better. Your makeup will sit well, and also look better, too! Think about it: your skin is smooth, so is your makeup! Slaying all around!

Correct Color

So this may sound a little technical, but it's true! Freshly exfoliated skin will show it's true depth and undertone. So basically, you will see your correct skin color and undertone, after exfoliation! Sometimes, what happens is dead skin will sit too long on top of the epidermis, causing you to look a little gray or washed out. So removing the dead skin, dirt, etc., will help your true skin tone shine through!

A Natural Glow

Yup, you read it correctly! Exfoliation gives your skin a glow from within! So not only are you smooth, but you'll have a natural glow about you! Who doesn't want that!?! And that natural glow will shine through your makeup! Gorgeous!
